Meerkats are a small rodent, part of the mongoose family. They live in the Kalahari Desert in South Africa. Meerkats live in groups, often called a mob or a gang. These groups consist of mainly 20 members, but some have up to 50. Meerkats are very social animals, animals in the same group usually groom each other to strengthen bonds. The meerkat is known for standing up on its hind legs to stand guard.
The meerkats' diet consists of mainly insects but they also eat lizards, snakes, scorpions, spiders, and plants. The meerkat is immune to some poisons, including the poison of the scorpions in the Kalahari desert, unlike humans. They have an average lifespan of 12-14 years.
